Where my blogs at? they right here, dawg.
Click here to download Kyle Hall’s new mix for Resident Advisor. He recorded it to cassette, which makes it sound all crunchy and distorted and ill. The last time someone did this for RA (to my knowledge) was Scott Grooves, another Detroit DJ, and it was similarly brilliant (although that was basically mid 90’s deep house and this is more techno/electro orientated). The effect it has on the music is that it makes the kick drums sound crunchy with distortion, which wakes me up to how powerful the humble, sometimes humdrum, kick drum can be in techno - a bit like a Kode 9 set I heard a few years ago recorded at FWD where Zomby’s ‘Tarantula’ suddenly sounded vicious cos the kicks were reverberating off the walls floor and ceiling. The low-end distortion also does interesting things to the jazzy Detroit-techno synths, distorting and contorting them.
